Speech

March 15, 2008
Abul Qaasim al-Qushayri said in his famous Risaalah,
“Remaining silent is salvation, and that is a fundamental principle. And staying quiet at the proper time is a characteristic of manhood, just as speaking when it is proper to speak is from the most honorable of matters .”

O you who are turned away

March 13, 2008
“O you who are turned away, O you who are deprived of meeting your loved ones, if you want to know how you stand before the king, then look at how you are spending your time and what work you are assigned to do. How many people stand at the door of the king, but no one enters except the one whom he cares for. Not every heart is fit to draw close, not every heart can be filled with love, not every wind is like the morning breeze.”

Since I understood four things…

March 13, 2008
Since I understood four things, I have discarded all other knowledge.
  1. First, that my daily sustenance has already been apportioned to me and will neither increase nor decrease by my futile efforts, so I strive to increase it no more.
  2. Second, I alone and no one else can atone for my sins, so I devote myself to the Lord.
  3. Third, I know that I will never be able to escape death, which is in our pursuit, so I have prepared myself to meet him.
  4. Fourth, I know that God is observing me; therefore I restrain from doing what I must not do.”
    Imam Haatim al-Asamm

true believer should rely on patience

March 13, 2008
He who acts without knowledge causes more corruption than good, and he who does not consider his speech to be part of his actions sins repeatedly. Satisfaction is scarce, and the true believer should rely on patience. Allah never bestowed a blessing upon one of His servants and then took it away from him, giving him patience in return for that which was taken away, except that the replacement was better than what was taken away from him.”
Then he recited the following verse:
“Surely the patient will be paid their wages in full without reckoning.” [39:10]

Virtues of Knowledge

March 13, 2008
Abu Nu’aym narrates in Al-Hilyah that Mu’adh bin Jabal  Said:
“Knowledge is a comforting friend in times of loneliness, it is the best companion during travels, and it is the inner friend who speaks to you in your privacy. Knowledge is the discerning proof of what is right and what is wrong, and it is the positive force that will help you surmount the trials of comfort, as well as those of hardships. Knowledge is your most powerful sword against your enemy, and finally, it is your most dignifying raiment in the company of your close companions. Through knowledge, Allah, blessed be His Name, raises some people in rank, and He makes them leaders in righteousness and models in morality. The vestige of their faith is avidly sought, their deeds are emulated perceptively, and people will seek and sanction their opinions solicitously and unequivocally. The heavenly angels seek their company and anoint them with their wings, every fresh or withered life they pass by implore Almighty Allah to forgive them their sins, even the fish in the oceans, the beasts of the lands and every bird of prey and migratory bird pray and solicit the mercy of Almighty Allah on their behalf. This is because knowledge revives the dead hearts and drives them out of darkness into light, and because knowledge is the light of the inner eyes that cures one’s blindness and restores his inner sight”

Part from the days

March 12, 2008
Part from the days where you used to do as you wish
And restrain your soul when the decree of Allah is ordained
And don’t despair over the events of the past
Fore none of the events of the dunya were ever meant to remain
And be a man who is firm upon his affairs
And whose character is that of pardoning and nobility
And there is sadness or happiness that is continuous
Just as there is there is no comfort or pain
If you are a person who is satisfied with what he has
Then you and the owner of all possessions are equal
And upon he who’s open valley death descends upon
Then there is no earth or sky to protect you from it
And the earth of Allah is vast but
When the ordainment of Allah descends even the open valley congests
~ Imaam Shafi`ee’ ,

If only you knew

March 12, 2008
Abu-d-Dardaa’ – once said:
“If only you knew what you will certainly see upon your death, you would never again eat a single bite out of a craving appetite, and you would never again drink an extra sip of water for the pleasure of unquenchable and insatiable thirst.
Hence, you will remain outdoor in perpetuity, bewildered and awaiting the unexpected, and you will never again seek comfort in a shelter or seek a shade. You will wander aimlessly and climb the hilltops of every mountain, you will look up towards the heavens and beseech your Lord for mercy, and you will beat on your chest and cry endlessly, and you will wish that you were a little vegetable – a plant which is protected to grow, and then plucked to be eaten by a hungry person passing along.”

March 12, 2008

You recognise the Qur`an reader…

March 12, 2008
‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud said:  You recognise the Qur`an reader when he stays up worshipping at night while others remain asleep, and he observes voluntary fast during the day when others feast.
He is mostly heavy hearted, while others merrily celebrate the attractions of this passing world. He cries when others laugh, he is silent while others mix truth with falsehood, and he is humble and meek when others walk around exhibiting haughtiness disdain & arrogance.
In fact one who reads the Qur`an is contemplative and despondent; he is wise, forbearing, knowledgeable and mostly quiet. Such one is neither coarse nor slumberous and he is not boisterous, vociferous, or argumentative.”
[Hilyat al Awliyaa pg 110 #245]

with more terror than a wolf fleeing from a lion.

March 12, 2008
Worship and obedience illuminate the heart and make it strong and steadfast, until it becomes like a clear mirror, shining with light.
When Shaytaan draws close, he is struck by its light like those who try to eavesdrop [in the heavens] are struck by the shooting stars, and Shaytaan flees from this heart with more terror than a wolf fleeing from a lion.
ibnul qayyim in Al-Jawaab al-Kaafi, p. 64

When giving advice

March 12, 2008
“When you give advice, find a private place and speak gently. Do not say that somebody else has said the criticisms that you address to your companion, that would be to speak ill.  If you phrase your advice bluntly, you will annoy and discourage. “Speak to him courteously,” the Almighty has said: “And speak unto him a gentle word.” [Qur’an 20:44]  And the Prophet – salallahu `alayhi wa sallam – said: “Do not discourage him.”  If you are advising someone, and you insist on seeing your advice taken, you are doing wrong since you could be mistaken and you would be insisting on him accepting your error and rejecting the truth.”
- Ibn Hazm, Al-Akhlaq wa’l-Siyar (Morals and Behaviour)

Its price is Paradise…

March 12, 2008
Get yourself out of this limited world of diseases to the wide world of the hereafter, which has what the eyes have never seen. Nothing is impossible there, and love is not lost. O you who sold yourself for the sake of something that will cause you suffering and pain, and which will also lose its beauty, you sold the most precious item for the cheapest price, as if you neither knew the value of the goods nor the meanness of the price. Wait until you come on the Day of mutual loss and gain and you will discover the injustice of this contract. “There is no God but Allah” is something that Allah is buying. Its price is Paradise, and the Messenger is its agent, and you will be pleased to part with a small part of this worldly life to obtain it. The part you lose is a small part of something that as a whole is not worth a mosquito’s wing.(Ibn ul Qayyim al Jawziyyah)

Three things make me laugh…

March 12, 2008
On the authority of Jafar bin Burqaan who said “I came to know that Salman al-Farsi used to say:
“Three things make me laugh and three things make me cry.
I laugh
  1. at the one who is hopeful of the world yet death seeks him;

  3. the one who laughs at the top of his voice, while he does not know whether he is pleasing his Lord or displeasing Him.
Three things make me cry:
  1. parting from our beloved Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon hm) and his Companions;
  2. the terror of the onset of the pangs of death and
  3. the standing in front of the Lord of the Worlds while not knowing whether I will be turned towards the Fire orParadise“.

No Poverty After Paradise …

March 12, 2008
Shu`bah and Qatadah related from Yunus bin Jubayr, who said that he accompanied Jundub and he and his companions said to him,“Give us some advice.” He replied,
“I advise you to fear Allah. I advise you to adhere to the Qur’an – for it is light in the darkest of nights and it is guidance during the day. Apply it.. but if a trial such as poverty comes to you, give precedence to your religion over wealth. If that trial worsens, continue to put your religion before your wealth and your soul, for indeed the only one who is destroyed is the one whose religion is destroyed; the one who is poor is the one who has lost his religion. Know that there is no poverty after Paradise and there is no richness after the Hellfire.”
